The Packard Twelve was the pinnacle of engineering and styling during the Classic Era. And the Convertible Victoria body is one of the most desireable - and lowest production - models.
This Twelve was delivered by Packard Motor Car Co. of Columbus. Ohio on December 24, 1934. It must have been a great Christmas surprise for the recipient. In the early 1990's a full down-to-the-frame restoration was begun. It was a process that would take fully ten years to complete. No nut or bolt was left unturned to bring this Packard back to factory-original condition. Following completion, in 2002 it was acquired by the current owner, a prominent member of the Classic Car Club of America in the Pacific Northwest. He has both shown and driven this Twelve. On the show field it received both CCCA Primary and Senior badges - meaning it was judged first place in two national Classic Car Club meets. On the road it has participated in several CCCA CARavans and local tours, as well as twice in the annual driving tour from Seattle to the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California (and return to Seattle - a 1,800 mile round-trip.) It has always perfomed flawlessly.
The body is lovely. Finished in a deep maroon/aubergine color that appears almost black in low light, it is accented by the deep red pinstriping and liberal use of chrome: including the headlight shells, bumpers, hood louvers, door hinges, tail lights, and of course the six wire wheels. Fitted with an accessory Packard trunk rack and matching trunk (restored at a cost of $10,000), which tips forward to allow access to the main trunk within the body of the car, without having to remove the trunk from the rack. It is a fabulous sporting car that stands out in a dignified way, wherever it goes.
The creamy beige leather upholstery is gorgeous, and wonderfully cool on a warm day. The stitching is correct and the leather is in beautiful condition throughout. Both front seats tip forward to allow access to the rear seating area. Brown wool carpeting accents the interior. The door moldings are genuine wood and superb. The glass and interior chrome appear as-new. The dashboard is lovely. All gauges work and register accurately. Includes auxiliary electric fuel pump, switched under the dash, and dual windshield wipers. Original Packard radio works but does not have an antenna connected. Tan Haartz cloth canvas convertible top presents nicely.
Mechanically excellent. The original 473 cubic inch, 175 horsepower V-12 engine was the last one rebuilt by the late Charlie Last; acknowledged as the finest rebuilder of Packard Twelves anywhere. Since rebuild/restoration, this Twelve has been driven just over 12,000 miles. It runs today as well as any Twelve I have known (and I have personally owned one and been around dozens over the years.) Original 6 volt system. New wiring harness. It starts at the touch of the starter button - hot or cold - idles in near-silence, runs cool, and drives, shifts and stops beautifully with vacuum-assisted clutch and brakes.
There is little to add. If you are looking for a wonderful, tour-proven Packard Twelve with a fine show pedigree, this is it. It would be welcome at any car show or concours event and score highly today. As the photos confirm, it is also dialed-in and can be enjoyed regularly for local driving or extended touring. Truly the best of both worlds.
