In the Spring of 1940, Buick introduced their luxurious Roadmaster Model 71C.While advertised as a "Phaeton" it is technically a Convertible Sedan, with four doors (each with a roll-up window, unlike a true Phaeton that used snap-on side curtains to enclose the car.) These were among the last of the 4-door convertibles offered by Buick, the model being discontinued after 1941. Only 235 were made in 1940, this being car #36. Few survive today.
This example was restored to a very high level some years ago and presents beautifully today as the photos and video show.Straight, rust-free body was refinished in correct "Moores Green" color. The paint shows nicely today with a deep shine.Chrome was refinished and trim polished at the time of restoration and is bright and shiny. The tan Haartz cloth top was also replaced and is in excellent condition. It also includes a correct, fitted canvas top boot. The top raises and lowers easily and is tight and snug when closed. The glass is all excellent with the exception of the driver's door glass which shows two cracks. The window is solid, rolls up and down easily and can continue to be used as it is, or replaced by the new owner.
The tan genuine leather interior is gorgeous. New green wool carpeting was sewn and fitted in the front and rear compartments, complimenting the rest of the upholstery. The instrument panel and glove box door feature a machine-turned finish. All gauges are original and work with exception of the speedometer, which is intermittent, and the clock. Woodgrained dashboard is lovely. This car also features a Buick branded AM radio and dual under-seat heaters. A nice package. Red wheels are wrapped by newer wide whitewall radial tires, capped by bright chromed trim rings and hubcaps. Carpeted trunk includes spare wheel and matching radial tire.
PLEASE SEE PHOTOS THAT SHOW CURRENT CONDITION.
Mechanically sound with rebuilt 320 cubic inch "Dynaflash" overhead valve straight eight engine, generating 141 horsepower. The radiator was recently re-cored and a new water pump and thermostat were fitted to ensure cool running at highway speeds when touring. Starts easily and runs smoothly with plenty of power. No smoke or unusual noises. 3-speed manual transmission shifts crispy. 4-wheel hydraulic brakes stop smooth and straight. Undercarriage is clean and rust-free, additional testament to the lasting quality of the restoration and care it has received.
