FROM THE GEORGE CHOBAN COLLECTION
This Packard was sold new on July 20, 1933 by Packard Service and Sales Company in Portland, Oregon. The original owner was Thomas Banfield, the Director of the Oregon Highway Department. Mr. Banfield helped develop much of Oregon's modern highway system. He kept this car until his passing in 1950 at age 64. The state of Oregon honored him by naming the "The Banfield Expressway" in his honor (which later became Interstate Highway 84 - today known as "The Banfield Freeway.")
Following Banfield's passing, this car, with approximately 48,000 miles on it, was sold by his family to Wayne Trowbridge in Salem, Oregon. Trowbridge and his brother operated a Packard repair shop in Salem. In 1958, the Trowbridges sold this car to 28-year-old collector, George Choban. He kept this car for the next 64 years, until his passing in 2022. It has been kept by his family since then. Current mileage is 49,836, which is believed to be correct from new.
Never fully restored, this Packard is very original throughout. It has merely been maintained over the years. It did receive some areas of paint on the fenders, top of hood and the wire wheels. We also noted that the bumpers and radiator shell appear to have been re-chromed at some time in the past. But even these improvements have mellowed through the years and appear now in keeping with the rest of the original paint on the bulk of the body, and the other factory plating. The wood framed body is in excellent condition with no damage, no flex or rot and the doors hang perfectly and close at a touch. Top insert appears in excellent condition. Tires are older but also in good condition for local, low speed use.
The interior is the 93-year-old factory original and in remarkably good condition throughout. The area of most wear is the front carpet, which is covered by Packard branded floor mats. The seat fabric is soft, not brittle. Not musty. No odors. Door panels are nice with gorgeous burled wood moldings. Rear window shades are present and working. A true time capsule.
Original engine starts and runs well with no unusual noises. Smooth at all speeds. Recent full rebuild of the carburetor and fuel pump. Auxiliary oil filter and battery shut off switch was added at sometime in the past. 3-speed manual transmission shifts well without clashing. All of the instruments work except the clock. 6 volt electrical system with new battery. Headlights converted to modern bright LED bulbs. Adjustable 4-wheel mechanical brakes stop smooth and straight. Adjustable shock absorbers work well. A pleasure to drive. Undercarriage is original, clean and rust-free.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire a very original Packard with documented ownership from new and long-term ownership by a knowledgeable Packard collector and preservationist.
