Auburn was part of E.L. Cord's automotive triumvirate of Auburn - Cord and Duesenberg. Auburns were noted for their beautiful styling and certainly at the top of the list was this 851 Salon Phaeton. While technically, a "Convertible Sedan" with roll-up windows in the doors (which were being favored by the mid-1930's as opposed to a true Phaeton with snap-on canvas side curtains for inclimate weather), this Auburn offers true Phaeton styling. With the top down and windshield folded, it gives you the thrill of open-air motoring. With the top and windows up, it is a snug sedan. Truly the best of both worlds.
Sold new in Seattle, this Auburn has lived in the Pacific Northwest all of its life. It was purchased in 1979 from the second owner by noted NW collector, John Kallstrom. The car was original and unrestored, showing all the wear expected in a 45-year-old automobile. Kallstrom kept the car at his Portland, Oregon area home but never restored it. Following Kallstrom's passing, it was acquired by a family friend and knowledgable collector who set out on a comprehensive, 2-1/2 year frame-off restoration that has just recently been completed. Starting from the back to the front, here is a partial listing of what was done:
• New gas tank • New shock absorbers • Rebuilt 2-speed rear-end • New wiring harness • Stainless steel exhaust system • Rebuilt transmission • New clutch • Complete engine rebuild with all parts renewed or replaced (starter, generator, fuel pump, carburetor, etc.) • New brakes including lines, shoes and linings • New recored radiator • All chrome re-plated • Restored wire wheels fitted with 650-16 Auburn-branded radial tires.
Body was stripped and re-painted in black with red accents. Accessories in the car include: Deluxe Crosley chrome heater and switch • Deluxe Crosley radio • Auburn-branded back-up light • Turn signals • Seat Belts • Electric fuel pump.
This Lycoming straight 8 engine starts easily and runs smoothly. This car is fresh and ready to be enjoyed or shown. This car has been Certified by the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Club as a Category 1 car with original numbers as it left the factory in 1935. It is qualified for all ACD Club events, shows and tours, as well as being a Full Classic™ as recognized by the Classic Car Club of America and eligible for participation in all of their events.
Few of these 851 Salon Phaetons survive today - especially in this condition. It certainly turns heads wherever it goes.
