1940 Packard 160 Convertible Sedan

This Packard Super Eight 160 Convertible Sedan was sold new by the Thompson Motor Company in Beverly Hills, California on May 9, 1940. The perfect car for a well-heeled owner to enjoy the glorious sunny days in Southern California before the outbreak of WWII. While the original owner is now unknown, this car has benefited from a life on the west coast.
About 10 years ago, this car received a comprehensive concours-quality restoration that looks beautiful today. Painted in Packard's 1940 paint code "Z" - with French Blue body and red wheels and pin striping. It is a striking combination that compliments the sporty convertible sedan body style. All chrome was re-plated and trim polished. The interior was upholstered in a beautiful tan butterscotch colored leather. Wilton wool carpeting. Tan Haartz cloth manual convertible top with chromed bows and glass zippered rear window is in perfect condition.
The dashboard and interior trim were correctly woodgrained and are a standout. The dashboard plastic was replaced with correct reproductions and appear as-new. All gauges work and register accurately. This car is highly-optioned with Packard deluxe heater/defroster and Packard radio which still wears the call letters of vintage southern California stations on the selector buttons. The clock has also been restored and is working. Excellent glass throughout with working windshield wipers. Undercarriage is equally as clean as the rest of the the car and of course, rust-free.
Mechanically excellent. The rebuilt 356 cubic inch, 165 horsepower, 9 main bearing straight eight engine was the most powerful American 8 cylinder engine on the road in 1940 (for comparison, the Cadillac V8 was rated at 150 HP.) This car starts easily, runs smoothly and is whisper quiet at idle - a hallmark of the Packard 356 engine. In addition, this car is equipped with the optional (just rebuilt) Borg-Warner R-9 overdrive transmission, which makes this a car that can cruise on highways at 70 miles per hour, easily keeping up with modern traffic. Transmission shifts perfectly. New Diamondback radial wide whitewall tires hold the road nicely. Brakes stop smooth and straight. Truly a pleasure to drive anywhere. This Packard is in top condition throughout and ready to show or go anywhere. It is considered a "Full Classic"™ by the Classic Car Club of America and is eligible for participation in all CCCA shows and tours, as well as those by the Packard Club, Packards International, AACA and more. It recently participated in a 1,200 mile tour around the Northwest and did not miss a beat.
