VIDEO TOUR COMING SOON.
This 1940 Packard Super Eight 180 7-Passenger Touring Sedan rides on a 148" wheelbase and is powered by Packard's "New-for-1940" 356 cubic-inch Super 8 engine with 9 main bearings and 160 horsepower. It was the most powerful American 8-cylinder engine made in 1940.
Purchased new on October 21, 1939 from Earle C. Anthony Packard in Los Angeles, it was ordered by the General Manager of the Coca Cola Bottling Company in Bakersfield and registered to the company. Intended for use as a car to transport up to 7 visitors and executives to the plant, and as a personal car for the Manager, it was used in that capacity for several years until the Manager's passing. His family kept the car and it continued to be registered to the company until the early 1970's, although used in a very limited capacity.
It was purchased by a California collector in the mid-1970's in original condition. It received an interior refreshing with new upholstery, plastic dashboard refurbishment and some areas of exterior paint. The car was shown and toured in Packard Club events. Purchased by the current owner in Oregon in 2012, he performed additional mechanical refreshing of the engine and exhaust system, as well as fitting it with wide whitewall radial tires. Based on current condition, the mileage of 36,318 showing is believed to be correct from new, but due to age, cannot be verified.
Today, the engine starts easily and runs smoothly with excellent power. Brakes stop smooth and straight. 3-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly. Gauges work. Radio and clock are present but not functioning. Working Packard Deluxe heater and defroster. Turn signals added. Sealed beam headlights. 6 volt electrical system. Excellent glass all around. Clean, rust-free undercarriage.
This is an elegant top-of-the-line Packard optioned with rear jump seats, dual side mounted spare wheels with covers, trunk rack, folding rear foot rest, running boards, back-up light, front bumper guard, cormorant hood ornament and deluxe "banjo" steering wheel. A lovely package that is perfect for personal enjoyment or an ideal wedding or livery for-hire car. Whatever your use, you'll arrive everywhere in style!
