From the Howard Freedman collection. The Edsel was designed as a mid-level car to fit in-between the Mercury and Lincoln models, produced by Ford. While they claimed to have 9 years of research and development into the new vehicle, when it was introduced in the fall of 1957 amid much hoopla, Ford soon found they had missed the mark - or more correctly - the market. While they anticipated selling 200,000 Edsels in the first year, only a little over 63,000 actually rolled off the line. For 1959, the Edsel was re-designed (particularly the front and rear ends) to soften the look and make it more in-line with other models of the day. Still, sales dropped to 44,891 cars. The 1960 models also saw a design change, but sales dropped to just 2,846 cars. When production ended on November 19, 1959, a grand total of 118,287 Edsels had been made in the 3 model years. While the Edsel became the brunt of jokes over the years, they were really a good mid-priced car that had suffered from an identity crisis. Those low sales, however, have now turned surviving Edsels into orphans that attract collectors looking for a car that is not seen every day, but certainly has instant recognition. This particular car is an even rarer Edsel, as it was built at Ford's Oakville, Ontario, Canada plant. Between 1958-59 just 7,440 Edsels were produced there. The Canadian cars (including this one) differ from the U.S. built cars. All had white steering wheels and columns. The upholstery design is also unique to the Canadian cars. Also, most sported the "M2" E-400 361 cubic inch V8 engine, producing 303 horsepower. Collector-owned for many years, this Ranger is a beautiful example with just 38,190 miles showing, which we believe is correct mileage from new. The paint on the "Frosted Lime" green body and "Colonial White" top is a combination of excellent original with some small indistinguishable areas of touch-up. Chrome and trim are excellent throughout, showing brightly. The wheels are wrapped by near-new Goodyear "diamond" pattern wide whitewall radial tires. The interior is exceptional. The vinyl and cloth upholstery features the unique Canadian patterned cloth, which was re-created for the front seat by SMS fabrics as an exact match to the original. The door panels and carpet appear like-new. Space-age dashboard also appears as-new, helping to corroborate its low mileage. All gauges work and register accurately. Working heater, radio and lights. Trunk is clean and in keeping with the rest of the car. The 361 V8 engine starts easily, runs smoothly with excellent power. 3-speed manual transmission shifts easily. Brakes stop well. This car participated in a 1,200 mile classic car tour around Oregon and northern California in the fall of 2024 and performed beautifully traveling over back roads and on the freeway from sea level at the Oregon coast up to the 7,000 foot elevation of Crater Lake. This Edsel is a unique slice of automotive history that is ready for more adventures, and will continue to turn heads wherever it goes. PLEASE SEE PHOTOS WHICH SHOW CURRENT CONDITION. WE WILL HAPPILY SELL TO BUYERS WORLDWIDE AND CAN ASSIST WITH SHIPPING ANYWHERE.
